I almost have a batch of 3 instruments ready for finishing. This will be my first attempt with the KTM-9 and System 3 Epoxy filler combination. I am looking for tips on how to spread the epoxy. I was using a single edged razor blade on my test pieces and that worked pretty well. My big question is about the neck. How do you epoxy users epoxy the neck without making a big mess? Some tips from those with experience would be really appreciated. Thanks

Josh

For the neck, I thin (Z-Poxy) 50/50 with Denatured alcohol and wipe it on with a wadded up cotton rag.
For everything else, I use an old Credit card, or a fake CC, I get them in the mail every-week and save them, ya know the onces, MR John Smith 124 Anywhere USA

I bought a couple of the cheep window squeegies (plastic with a rubber blade) and cut them down to 4". you have a nice handle and they work very well. Or you can use a credit card or whatever you can come up with. Lance's method for necks sounds alright. I have been using a CC around the neck sideways but I always end up with a rag so I may as well start with a rag I guess. Hope your wearing gloves Lance.

Josh I like to use a stiff single edge razor knife blade with the corners rounded. like Lance I use the padding method on the neck.

Thanks, I like my logo as well. I say that because I can take no credit for the design. It was done by a good friend of mine who is very artistic. She also designed the label which I put inside my guitars. It is equally cool. I don’t have a copy of it on this computer or I would post it for you to see. My artistic abilities are limited to being creative with the wood combinations on my guitars. I can’t draw or paint. Did you notice that the first part of the “H” is shaped like a “J” for my first initial. And the guitar line underneath is just plain cool! It’s a little tricky to inlay onto the headstock. It takes me about 45 min to cut it out of MOP and another 1-1 ? hours to inlay it. But man does it look good when it done.

I’m assuming that you are not adding the Silica Thickener when you thin the epoxy for the neck. Is that right? Do you guys use the thickener on the back and sides?

I have a "collection" of hotel room swipe cc-style keys that I always forget to turn in. These are much thinner and more flexible than actual credit cards. They are much more controllable for me than a stiffer card.

If anyone needs one, email me.

Josh I am using Z-poxy's finishing resign it is fairly thin stuff at 1/1 and spreads very easy and fills well. No I do not use any silica beads to thicken. On some very porous woods I may have to fill twice or maybe three time. but I prefer that to using a thicker base to prevent bridging and maintain clearity.

To apply full strength to the neck, put on some rubber gloves and wipe on with your index finger as you rub the back of the neck. You might want to tape the fretboard just in case you get carried away. Good luck!
